  4. Using this program, you can compare PICT files, and find out if they
  5. are identical, or at least very similar. The program works on all PICT and
  6. JPEG files, including Quicktime compressed pictures. To use JPEG files,
  7. QuickTime needs to be present.

  9. PICTcompare also identifies two pictures when
  10.     - one of them is grayscale
  11.     - they don't have the same size / aspect ratio
  12.     - they have a different intensity
  13.     - they have a different pixel-depth
  14.     - and when one of them is blurred
  15.  
  16. PICTcompare works best on digitized images, like scanned photos.

  19. Using PICTcompare

  22. The simplest operation is to use the 'Search Folder' command on any folder
  23. containing PICT files. Then PICTcompare loads all needed information and
  24. compares all pictures with each other. If the pictures are compressed,
  25. this may take a while. The name of the current picture processed is
  26. displayed at the bottom of the main dialog. When PICTcompare has finished
  27. it's task, it displays a list of similar pictures, sorted by the "compare value",
  28. which means the most similar pictures are at the top of the list. This
  29. compare value is also displayed within the main dialog.

  33. Limitations:
  34.     - Only 10000 pictures may be compared with each other.
  35.     - Only the first 1000 found pictures will be display.

  37. Remember to increase to partition size about 1MB for every 1000
  38. pictures you want to compare.

  45.     - Load Master
  46.              Load a master image for the following compare operations.
  47.     - Compare with Folder
  48.     Compares all images within this folder (and all subfolders) with the
  49.     master image set using the 'Load Master' menu command.
  50.     - Search Folder
  51.     Compares all images within this folder with each other. (Doesn't
  52.     use the master image)
  53.     - Preferences
  54.     Limit value :
  55.     This sets the limit for a compare operation. The lower the 
  56.     value, the more the same they have to be. Absolut identical pictures
  57.     have values between 0 and 10, picture that are most likely the same
  58.     have values between 11 and 20. Sometimes there are similar pictures
  59.     with values over 20, therefore a good limit value is between 25 and 30.
  60.                 Add vector resource :
  61.     When checked, the compare information (202 bytes!) of each picture is added
  62.     within the picture as a 'vect' resource (id 128). The next time PICTcompare
  63.     needs to compare this picture, it just loads this resource and does not
  64.     have to load the whole image. If the pictures are compressed, this
  65.     makes it a LOT faster.
  66.                 Live Preview :
  67.                 Display the picture as it is loaded. Also works if a 'vect' resource is
  68.                 available.
  69.     - Remove Vect Resources
  70.     Removes the vect resources from all pictures found within this folder.

  99. I made PICTcompare, because my archive of pictures got much to big!
  100. I couldn't tell which picture I already had, and which not. Therefore I thought,
  101. let the computer do the work and compare all pictures for me.
  102. I did various of tests and PICTcompare always found the pictures that
  103. were more or less the same.
